UM Canterbury Preschool

Take a look at our Curriculum

Schedules and activities are flexible and modified to meet each child's individual needs. Though we provide a general pace for our day, we allow time for children to develop holistically through opportunities to be creative and expressive and to experiment, discover, and problem-solve at their own pace. Our curriculum is based on a balance of individual needs, interests of the children, and developmental levels. Activities for all programs may include circle time, stories, games, music, art, indoor and outdoor play. In addition, there are plenty of hands-on activities that encourage learning in math and science, as well as activities to promote pre-academic learning of colors, shapes, and letter/numeral recognition. Children are given many opportunities to make choices and are encouraged to make choices that we feel as parents and teachers are the right choice.

Dear Families:

We are excited to announce that for the 2009-2010 School year, Canterbury will be a part of the CreativeCurriculum.net Online Assessment System.  This system will allow all families at UM Canterbury including PS 2 and pre-K to participate by registering online at CreativeCurriculum.net.  Once you register, you will receive via email a password to log into your account and have access to your chid's progress here at Canterbury.  This online tool helps us to follow your child's progress, plan the curriculum, and communicate and collaborate with you. This system will also invite you to participate in the Parent Central area on CreativeCurriculum.net which enhances our ability to communicate with you and provides you with a look at your child's ongoing devlopment and our classroom activities.  This system allows you to:

  • Use a personalized communications journal to keep in touch with us and stay up-to-date on what your child is doing at school.  The journal allows you to view and respond to our observations of your child while he/she is at school.
  • View your child's electronic portfolio that includes photos, scanned art work and other electronic samples of his/her interactions at school.
  • Complete a developmental survey to assess your child's progress and view reports on your child's development.  This survey also helps us to get a complete picture of your child's skills and abilities, so that we can better support his/her learning here at Canterbury.
  • Get personalized activity recommendations for your child that are based on our assessments of your child's development.  Learn more about child development, our curriculum, early childhood education and parenting through an extensive resource center including articles and websites.  Please click on the link below to read the parent manual on how to register and use the CreativeCurriculum.net Online Assessment System.
